Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest
Matthew 11: 28
Matthew 11: 28
Matthew 5:37 says, "All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one."
The Bible is very clear, lying in all its forms is sinful. Here at Men's Ministry UK, we have seen firsthand the damage that lying can have on men. Matthew 5 actually talks about adultery, murder and divorce before showing us that we must always tell the truth. Unfortunately for men, we have a habit of lying. Men's Ministry UK has helped men who have lied to their wives about fidelity, or to their church family about deeply hidden, sinful behaviour.
Lying is almost the devil's way of ensuring that all other sins like sexual sin and greed continue. He persuades us as men that these 'little white lies' protect people, rather than harming them... and us. And the sad thing is, we believe it. And then we lie more, and they get worse.
The biggest lie among them all though seems to be the idol of us all: "my truth". Society now tells us that truth isn't even binary, and the Devil must be lapping this up. The fact that a society can actually claim two different people, believing two completely opposite things, and that both are true is, well, ridiculous. "My truth" is the Devil's way of using society to let people do whatever they want. There is now no fear of judgement, or even questioning, because it is an individual's truth.
This is a dangerous place for Christians and we must be on our guard. Jesus himself explains to us in John 14:6 “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." We must remember that what we want is not truth; that regret is not truth; and how we would like things to be is not truth.
Here at Men's Ministry UK, we have helped many men who have stumbled due to their lies, and we have helped many men who have stumbled over other people's lies. More and more, we are helping men who have sinned but bare the extra burden of then being lied about, and the scary thing is that society is not on men's side. Women seem to have all the power here and so we urge you brothers, steer very carefully and avoid sexual sin and lying, because women can be dangerous with the truth to your own demise. Exodus 20:16 is in the Bible for this very reason, “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbour." But as with many instructions in the Bible, many people do not follow these words. That is why, as men, we must submit to Him, knowing that if we do so, we are closing the door to sin that others could use to harm us.
Men, we urge you, do not lie. God can use them to bring you closer to Him, but it is a painful and challenging journey when the world is not going to support you, but judge you on their own very flexible truths. We have seen too many lives ruined by our own lies as men, and lies told about men by others. Please be careful.
